Plus size dresses were featured at Full Figure Fashion Week held in New York City from June 16th to June 18th. This event was sponsored by Gwen DeVoe, a model herself, and Sonsi to showcase the beauty of plus size fashion and curvy women. It was a chance for women, retailers, the media and designers to mingle and celebrate the plus size industry.
Gwen started the first Full Figure Fashion Week three years ago after attending a Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week runway show and realizing that while she liked many of the designs, she could not purchase them because of her size. Several beautiful plus size dresses were featured at the event's runway show and at the designer's sample racks.
Models that wore plus size dresses at Full Figure Fashion Week were confident and sexy. Some of the plus size dresses featured include a Harlow faux wrap dress by Kiyonna, a lovely blue and green geometric print with a dark blue sash; the Anastasia maxi dress by Sealed With a Kiss Designs, a bright and vibrant maxi dress with a crossed halter neckline; a lively animal print maxi dress by Catherine Black paired with a hacci open cardigan by Alight; a tropical print halter dress, Summer Fling by Lane Bryant Outlet; a turquoise Caribbean sheath dress by Catherines; a Golden Glow dress also by Catherines; and a very sexy one-shoulder dress with rose accents in black by Sydney's Closet.
Retailers who participated in this year's event include K-Mart, Sonsi, Lane Bryant and Catherines. Not only were dresses and separates featured, but many accessories including handbags, jewelry and shoes were also present at the event. The event presented curvy women with not only beautiful clothing, but ideas on how to accessorize their outfits to look sexy and chic.
Plus size women spend over $17 million annually on clothing. This is a large portion of the market and designers are coming to realize the value of catering to today's confident and demanding plus size consumer. Yet less than 10% of a store's floor space is dedicated to plus size dresses and other plus size pieces. The online market is a place where plus size dresses and clothing can be found in abundance. There are many online plus size stores today with more appearing every year. It has been speculated by experts in the industry the amount of money spent by plus size women would be considerably larger is they had more choices. With the lovely designs in plus size dresses at this year's Full Figure Fashion Week curvy women may be seeing more designs just for them in the very near future.
