The Union Jack has been around for over 600 years but until recently was never considered more than just a flag. However, since the 1960s it has stopped being just a flag and has become a fashion icon as well.

Since the music movement known as the British Invasion came over to the United States with mega-groups such as The Who promoting the use of the Union Jack through their own logos and outfits the Union Jack has been a sought after fashion symbol.
The flag was created to celebrate the union between England and Scotland under James I of England who was King of Scotland until he inherited the throne of England as well. The flag was originally only supposed to be flown on ships of the Royal Navy. However, as time went on the flag became a mark of the British nation as well as just the Royal Navy, although to this day the Merchant Navy still flies a different flag which is known as an ensign!
Today the inimitable shape can be found all over the place with designers from all over the place using the shape and colors of the Union Jack because of their versatility. It makes such a great fabric because even after the flag has been switched around, cut into pieces and put back together in the shape of a jacket it is still recognizable.
The trend has become so strong that the Union Jack can now be seen all over British high streets with everyone from major department stores to small chains having their own brand of merchandise featuring the flag. While clothes are still the most popular item there are still a huge number of other items that feature the red white and blue with everything from tea sets and pillows to blankets and cuff links featuring the design.
A quick search around Amazon revels just how popular the humble flag as become. As of November 2010 the search pulls almost 2,200 results for different items featuring the British Flag. Much of this popularity can be attributed to the very recognizable pattern which allows designers to mould the flag into almost any shape they want without the pattern, styling, significance or history disappearing.
Despite that the Union Jack coming to represent soccer hooliganism, the British National Party and other less-than-desirable elements of British society, it still has an undeniable place as a fashion icon, particularly among those foreigners who have no idea of the negative connotation that the flag can hold.
